According to the Loudon County Sheriff’s Office, 21-year-old Jose Aguilar-Martinez was arrested after police said he carjacked 54-year-old Melody Waldecker in Sterling, Virginia, a community about 30 minutes west of Washington, D.C. In the process of stealing her car, Aguilar-Martinez ran over the victim, killing her immediately.

According to reports, Waldecker, of Maryland, was at a 7-Eleven at a Sterling shopping center on Route 7 when she saw a man getting into her Kia Sorento and tried to stop him. Aguilar-Martinez took off in the car, hitting Waldecker along the way. She died at the scene, leaving behind four grieving children and eight grandchildren. A short manhunt quickly ended with Aguilar-Martinez in custody.

Fox News’ Bill Melugin said the sheriff’s office confirmed the man is an illegal alien from El Salvador who entered the U.S. at an unknown time and location as a “gotaway,” meaning he was not apprehended by border agents after crossing the border. An ICE detainer has been placed against him for immigration violations in addition to his local felony carjacking charge, with more charges expected. He is currently being held without bail.
