After the legislature and the governor could not agree on terms to solve a budget gap, the Minnesota government is being shutdown. Minnesota law requires a balanced budget for every two year cycle. The Democratic governor wants to raise taxes on the wealthy yet the Republican controlled legislature wants spending cuts. About 22,000 state employees are furloughed without pay.
